It's been a long time since I have updated this blog but things have been hectic this year. So far, I have managed to get my side job back, continue working full time at my regular job, started driving the church van again, and started pursuing a dream I always wanted to accomplish.
I am in the process of signing up for the Ky National Guard. I have always wanted to be a Marine, but since I let that opportunity pass by one too many times, only the Army will take me. My wife wants me to go full-time Army, but I am going NG until I decide if I like it enough to do it 365 days a year.
My mother got her college degree around 40 years old, my father retired from a long career as a vendor at close to 40 to become a full-time bookkeeper, my mother finally started a daycare a few years ago, and obviously other people make career/life changing decisions later in life; not too long ago, a gentleman was in the news for attaining his first college degree at 98 years old. The Army was actually going to raise the maximum age to join to 40 years old.
I said all that to say that it seems that no matter your age, you should never feel too old to follow a dream. I won't get into all the hassle I have been through so far just to join the NG, because I am sure I am not the first or the last to face this much adversity to do so. I will simply throw out a piece of advice...
If you are even contemplating the military as a way of life or career, DO IT NOW, especially if you are still young. Do it before you have a chance to mess yourself over with any legal problems, credit problems, health problems, accidents, mental issues, or any other drama because it seems the fine folks at MEPS (the entrance process to join) are determined to find any and all reason to NOT enlist people. I certainly understand them being picky and thorough to weed out those that are shady, ill-health, joining to hide from someone/thing, etc... However, their tendancy to be a little too stringent could possibly keep a lot of honest, hard-working, good-potential people from getting in.
All that said, I am thankful to God for the opportunity to even be this far in the process. I hope and pray constantly that things will come through and finish the process soon so I can begin a new career path before I grow weary and give up.
May God bless any and all who read this. Have a great year !
